The issue of pineapple on a pizza has divided people for a long time. It is one of those things that you either really love or really hate.
Pizza is one of the staple meals when you consider Italian food and there are few people who have been to Italy who managed to avoid having a slice of pizza or two. However, do not make the mistake of thinking that every pizza topping that you can get at home can be found here. When it comes to pineapple, you will have to do without.
For the Italians, the idea of putting pineapple on a pizza is very wrong, so if you do try to order Hawaiian pizza, you may be greeted with a few curious looks.
And this is not the only type of Italian food that is not the same in Italy as it would seem to be everywhere else. Consider spaghetti Bolognese – at home, this is a tomato-based pasta sauce with minced beef served with spaghetti. However, in Italy, this type of sauce is only served with tagliatelle or penne pasta.
Most people will opt for garlic bread as a side dish with their pasta but this does not have Italian origins. The Italian version of this is Fettunta, bread that has been grilled, rubbed with a little garlic and drizzled with a little olive oil. Most people who have tried this will tell you that it is better than the garlic bread that you are used to at home.
The salad is something that you will see very often in Italy but don’t expect to be spoiled for choice when it comes to salad dressings. You might prefer ranch dressing at home, but here the dressing is a simple blend of extra virgin olive oil, a little balsamic vinegar and just a light sprinkle of salt.
